This site is devoted to exploring women's experiences as mothers. Common sense notions what "motherhood" abound, but how do these ideals of motherhood relate to the physical activities, the emotional investments and daily lives of women who perform that role? This exploration shifts focus from motherhood to mothering--the daily activities of mothers--and the relationship of women's real lives to ideas about motherhood.

The Mothers and Others website is part of a research project initiated by Dr. Dona Schwartz of the University of Minnesota School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Its purpose is to serve as a source of information and as a means of collecting accounts of mothering--both in words and pictures--from site visitors.

At the outset, the words and pictures on this site are those generated by interviews, observations and photographs of several women in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, USA. However, it is my hope that site will grow and there will be additional stories, pictures and commentary, creating a forum about, by, and for women who are mothers.
