Kim Garettson, the senior marketing manager, for the commercial division of Best Buy's new home products category has agreed to be the client for Visiting Associate Professor Patrick Strother's JOUR 4263 Public Relations Campaigns course and will serve on the jury with his executive director when the students present at the end of the semester. Kim will attend a number of classes to brief the students. Former Insight Executive Editor and current MPR reporter Brandt Williams spoke to Adjunct Instructor Ken Stone's JOUR 3451 Electronic Reporting Class about making the transition from print to radio news.
Dr. Steven Miles of the UMN Center for Bioethics spoke to Professor Gary Schwitzer's JOUR 8191 health journalism graduate seminar. His topic was the entanglement of interests in the dissemination of health and medical information to the public. Also this month, Schwitzer's class will visit the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

| Kudos to SJMC students nominated for Emmy Awards by the Upper Midwest Chapter of the National Television Academy: Andrew Berndt, Jerry Broeckert, Kris Engebretson, Audra Harpel, Josh Mundahl and Tyler Richter. The winners will be announced at the Emmys Gala on October 23. Undergrad student Aaron Gleeman was featured in a Star Tribune article about the popularity of online journals, or blogs, dedicated to the Twins. Professor Jane Kirtley was quoted in a September 3 LA Times column on the recent sexual assault case involving Kobe Bryant. The story is available here. Kirtley was the guest on MPR's Midday show on September 17. The title of the show is “Covering the Election: What's the Medi Kirtley was interviewed by WCCO-TV on September 17 for a story concerning the legal issues surrounding an individual who has been secretly taking photographs of women in a Target store. Kirtley was quoted in a September 20 Reuters story about CBS and the Bush memos. The story is available here. Kirtley was a guest on The Mike Gallagher Show, discussing the CBS/Dan Rather documents scandal on September 21. Kirtley was quoted in a New York Times article about the recent occurrences of reporters testifying about people who gave them information in confidence. The story is available here. Kirtley was quoted in a September 22 CBS MarketWatch story about CBS' methods and accountability. The story is available here. Kirtley was quoted in “Secrecy in the Bush Administration,” a report released by Rep. Henry A. Waxman and the House Committee on Government Reform - Minority Staff. M.A. student Pamela Hill Nettleton had an essay published in the St. Olaf Magazine in September, in addition to a cover story on creativity published in the September issue of Mpls/St Paul magazine. On September 30, Professor Gary Schwitzer was interviewed by KMSP-TV Channel 9 about the impact on consumers of Merck removing its drug Vioxx from the market.

Professor Jane Kirtley appeared on a panel, “Fair Press vs. Free Trial,” at the 2004 Society of Professional Journalists National Convention in New York City on September 11. Kirtley, assisted by Silha Research Assistant Andrew Deutsch, prepared and filed Comments on the Proposed Rules of Public Access to Records of the Judicial Branch with the Minnesota Supreme Court on September 2. Kirtley also testified at the public hearing held in St. Paul on September 21. Ph.D. candidate Amy Mattson Lauters will present her paper, “ Rediscovering Rose Wilder Lane , Literary Journalist,” at the American Journalism Historians Association annual conference in Cleveland, Ohio this month.
Schwitzer's manuscript, “A statement of principles for health care journalists” has also been accepted for publication in the Fall issue of the American Journal of Bioethics. |

"High hopes and dire warnings: In search of a credo for today's journalist" Geneva Overholser holds the Curtis B. Hurley Chair in Public Affairs Reporting, for the Missouri School of Journalism, in its Washington bureau. She is a frequent print and broadcast media critic, and writes the weblog “Journalism Junction” at www.poynter.org. Minnesota Electronic Theater For 14 years The Minnesota Electronic Theater has been the annual meeting place for the state's computer graphics community. It has served as the premiere showcase for locally-produced award-winning animation and a unique venue for computer graphics professionals, educators, and students to socialize. New Media Research Breakfast The new season of New Media Research Breakfasts will start with a presentation by School of Journalism and Mass Communication Assistant Professor Linus Abraham on the topic, “Discursive Enactment of Identity, Race and Cultural Citizenship in Cyberspace: The Case of Somalis in Minnesota.” Emerging Digerati Showcase GRAVEL Grant Project Review The recipients of GRAVEL grants in Spring 2004 will be presenting reports about their findings and the next steps they intend to take with their research. The afternoon long session will kickoff with a speech by human-computer interaction and girl-game expert http://www.tauzero.com/Brenda_Laurel, followed by the grantee reports, and concluding with a discussion by UM professors who are using, or exploring, game technology in their work.
