SJMC Happenings
 

A fond farewell to Professor Nancy Roberts, who is beginning an exciting new post in the Department of Communication at State University of New York - Albany. Roberts will be spearheading the establishment of an interdisciplinary journalism major at SUNY– Albany, in addition to teaching journalism courses.

The Minnesota Journalism Center hosted a reporting workshop for sports journalists on July 21. The day featured a lunch hour press conference with Jerry Bell of the Twins and Lester Bagley of the Vikings, in addition to presentations from Jay Wiener of the Star Tribune, Welch Suggs of the Chronicle of Higher Education and Danny Robbins of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Print, television and radio journalists traveled from Wisconsin, South Dakota and greater Minnesota.

Kirtley was a guest on MPR's "Midday" on July 14.  The topic was "The Media Mea Culpa," discussing recent apologies in the Lexington Herald-Leader and New York Times for omissions and errors in news coverage. The story is available here: http://news.minnesota.publicradio.org/programs/midday/

Kirtley was the guest on "Access Minnesota" to discuss freedom of the press and journalistic responsibility in the Internet age. The program was taped on July 27.  It airs on Radio K on Sunday mornings, and on various stations throughout Minnesota.

Publications and Research
 

Professor Jane Kirtley delivered a presentation on comparative media law systems to 10 visiting journalism educators from Latin America on June 22 in the SJMC Conference Center as part of a workshop on transparency reporting sponsored by the World Press Institute and the Minnesota Journalism Center.

Professor Gary Schwitzer's article, “Twin Cities TV health news:  on the road to irrelevance?” was published in the July 2004 edition of Minnesota Health Care News, a publication of Minnesota Physician Publishing, Inc.

On July 16, the Silha Center filed comments on the Department of Homeland Security and Department of Transportation interim final rule on the protection of sensitive security information.  Professor Jane E. Kirtley, assisted by Silha Legal Research Assistant Andrew Deutsch, prepared the comments.  They can be accessed on the DOT's website,  http://www.dot.gov/, TSA-2003-15569-13.
